[BETTY WEARS] Motivational Running Gear...

Bumpkin Betty, Top UK Fashion and Style Blogs, What to wear when exercising

It’s no secret that I’ve been majorly slacking on the exercise department of late. For a while I blamed work, each project that came along seemed busier than the last and every evening and weekend seemed to be consumed. On the rare occasion that one wasn’t I’d either spend it out and about enjoying my freedom or collapsing in a pit on the sofa with a giant tub of Ben & Jerry’s, just so god damn happy that I was finally able to relax. Run? Puhleeese, it might be my only chance to catch up on the Kardashians all month!

Then of course there were the weather barriers I formed for myself, at first I proclaimed it was far too dark to run in the evenings as I couldn’t see my feet in front of me and it was perfectly plausible that I would trip over a branch and break my leg… but then the clocks went back and the evenings got lighter and I didn’t have that excuse anymore. Luckily for the procrastinator in me, that was about the time that the rain started. That rain which seemed to be coming down all. the. time and we all know that finding the motivation to run when it’s chucking it down is hard, right? RIGHT?

But now the rain seems to have gone, the days are longer, and we’re in the wonderful period of balmy summer evenings and breezy sunshine mornings, which even the biggest procrastinator can’t deny is the perfect setting for running. Work seems to have settled into as much of a routine as a freelancer can ever ask for and my excuses really have run (sorry) dry.

I’ve realised that being my own boss will, inevitably, always come with an uncertain schedule and a varying workload so if I want to stay fit and not lapse into the writers nightmare of piling on the pounds while spending every waking hour sitting in front of a laptop eating ‘brain fuel’, I simply have to find a way to fit exercise into my routine.

For the moment I have a park on my doorstep that’s calling to me and a pair of Nike’s in my hall that are judging me, and that’s good enough for me. From now on I’m making a conscious effort to get up and out for a run early on the days I’m working from home, starting my day with a burst of energy, and changing into my kit as soon as I get home from days spent working elsewhere before I can settle on the sofa and find an excuse. Exercise is always so much easier to manage in the summer and my diet changes too from the comfort food of winter to the fresh salads of summer so I’m really hoping I can stick to it and get myself back in shape. Although I don’t have a holiday planned the lure of a bikini body seems just as important, if only so that I can treat myself to the odd ice cream sundae on the hotter days!

Betty Wears: Hoodie - c/o Speedway, Leggings, sports bra and vest - H&M Sport, Trainers - Nike at ASOS

I’ve mentioned it before, but a good kit or some new gear really does help me find my running mojo. They say planning your outfits the night before and laying them out can help drag you out of bed at the crack of dawn to go running before work, but I’m still yet to be convinced on that one.

I was recently introduced to the sportswear brand Speedway, a sports luxe label from the 80's which is relaunching with a new look. They do a great selection of gorgeously soft and comfortable hooded tops like the one I’m wearing as well as leggings, t-shirts and shorts. I’ve been really impressed with the quality, it’s so soft I just want to wrap myself up in it all of the time, which would be perfectly acceptable I’m sure as it’s also rather lovely looking in this summery mint green colour, but they are technically designed to cater to sports, in particular running and yoga. The brand’s online store has just recently launched but if you want to see the range in full, they’ve also got a little pop up running in Covent Garden until the 14th June.

The rest of the outfit is actually rather snazzy for me in terms of exercising garb, but pairing it all up definitely made me feel more confident when I took to the park. I’m usually a throw on the first pair of clean leggings I can find along with an oversized T-shirt that covers my bum, kind of girl but a few weeks ago I took part in the Electric Run with my runspiration sisters Fashercise and the theme was obviously bright, bold and electric so as to light up the course during the night time fun run. I wasn’t sure my black on black ensembles would cut it so invested in some jazzy leggings and colourful sports bras from H&M Sport.

H&M is always a go to for me for running clothes, as the items are really trendy, come in a bunch of fun colour ways and don’t break the bank either. Plus I find going into sports shops a terrifying experience, the minute I walk in there always seems to be a super fit individual bouncing towards me in their Lycra giving me the third degree about how often I exercise and what sports I do – terrifying! Going on the pieces I’ve bought so far from H&M, I’d say the quality is pretty good (my sports bras especially have lasted well) and the fits are comfortable.

These leggings are my new favourite thing, I reckon I could even get away with wearing them on non running occasions and I love the fact that they have a handy pocket on the bum – genius! When running longer distances they are not ideal as even though they have an elasticated waist, they do tend to slip down as I run (my pet hate) but I think this has a lot more to do with my awkward body shape than the trousers themselves. P.S if like me you always avoided patterned running trousers in fear of making your thighs look even bigger, then don’t! It turns out the busy pattern is actually quite slimming – who knew?

I’ve cheated slightly with the trainers as technically I don’t wear my Air Max’s to run in but they won in the style stakes when pitted against my muddy and battered running sneaks.

Here’s to a fit Summer, who’s with me? What do you wear to run?

  1. I've just found your blog through Not Dressed as Lamb. Love this post - I've also realised that sitting at a laptop & eating biscuits all day means I have to get my running gear out more often. Who knew?! Love the leggings. Happy running!
