I have to admit to still being a little on the fence about the off the shoulder trend. Actually that’s a lie, I love it on other people, I just not totally convinced of it on me.
At least with this style of off the shoulder anyway – the elasticated gypsy style – as I feel that you need to be pretty flat chested and have wonderfully toned shoulders to really pull it off. I can handle more of a structured bardot neckline but the elasticated look might be a step too far for me.
For that reason I almost didn’t buy this Boohoo pink number, but while picking up a few other bits from the site, and with a price of just £15, I decided to give it go. I brought it with me to Margate a couple of weeks ago before I’d tried it on properly, and when we woke on Sunday to bright blue skies and high heat, I threw it straight on with my Asos espadrilles and decided not to worry. It felt like a carefree little dress, and one that didn’t need to be over analysed greatly before wearing, especially at that price. There’s something about pastel pink against a glorious blue sky that just works, and despite the fact it is a little shorter on me than I’d normally wear and the neckline is still a bone of contention, my love for the flared sleeves, the smock shape and the adorable colour won out on this occasion. Besides at £15 I really can’t be too picky can I? It might just be a little sunshine number – worn on holidays and on rare heatwaves when you happen to be at the seaside in the UK.
One word of warning with these off shoulder numbers though – they’re a bugger for tan lines. Or burn lines if you’re a pasty Scot like me. Because it was windy at the beach I didn’t feel like I was getting hot, but by the time we’d got home that evening I had a rather fetching Bardot dress shaped red line around me that still hasn’t completely disappeared.
These photos were taken just after a mighty breakfast up on Cliff Terrace on our second day in Margate, and the cafe we visited (see more about all that in my Margate guide) was right opposite the most wonderful sea views, so we took a wander down the pier and snapped some shots of the dress and its first outing.
I do feel as if maybe I should venture out of the pink zone for once, and share an outfit of anything other than a pink dress here on the blog. But hey, they’re kind of my favourite! I hope you’re all having a great week and enjoying the sunshine!
